Work and Restrictions for students in Australia

Australian student visa does not obstruct the visa holder and dependents from working, however, students can not start working until and unless the study course has started. Afterward, the student can work 40 hours in two weeks; also the dependents are not allowed to start working before the commencement of the course. However, the Masters and doctoral degree students are allowed to work as many hours as they desire. Also, to work in Australia the international students need to obtain a tax file number; otherwise one can not work.

When you decide to move abroad, the first thing that comes to your mind are the living expenses, travel expenses, and the tuition fees that are compulsory to be paid, there’s no such thing as a free lunch. Applicant has to show the financial statement that he/she is capable of supporting himself for about 12 months. Australia has been accommodating international students for a long time now and is a very expensive country to live in for the students and lead the standard life.

Travel expenses

First of all, to fly to Australia, one will require purchasing the air ticket, and the airfares vary depending on if the flight will be one way or two-sided, most of the students prefer one-way ticket. As the students do not have to travel back home very often, it generates extra expenses as well as costs more than the one-way ticket. It costs around $700 to $900 to move from Pakistan to Australia, the flight time is quite long, so it is not mostly a direct flight. Also, if you are going to be accompanied by the dependents, you will have to purchase separate tickets for them, and it will result in the increment of the cost.

Estimated Tuition fees:

Tuition fees in Australia are high but not that as much as compared to the United Kingdom and the United States. On average the student will have to pay around AUD 30,000 per year, the annual fees for doctoral degree start from AUD 15,000 to AUD 35,000, and Master’s degree will cost around AUD 20,000 to AUD 35,000 per annum. However, the medical studies are eminently expensive and charge the students per year for as long as the course lasts. Withal,  the graduate programs have annual fees of about AUD 35,000 per annum.

Average Living Costs:

The students have to pay for the living costs and the living expenses as well; it is the main reason why the applicants demand the financial statements. They have to prove that they have adequate funds to bear all the expenses that will incur within the 12 month period. Some students might get residential facility within the premises of the university or colleges; however, some might not, the hostel provided by the institutions are the cheapest way of accommodation for the students. Otherwise, the apartments and rooms cost a lot; students must set aside a budget of around AUD 50 to AUD 500 a week to live in the privately rented place. It depends upon the area and surroundings the big cities and places near the universities cost way more than the one at some distance. Apart from these, the other expenses that are mandatory to live a standard life are the gas, electricity, groceries, phone, internet and transportation costs, together they will generate a cost of around AUD 300 a week. So, yes it will be quite challenging, but at the same time, the Australian government enables the students to work and support themselves. However, if you have dependents, the costs will increase accordingly and may double as well.
